Slogans

print
We've all heard "creators should get paid" and "stealing is wrong". We need simple phrases that identify the viewpoint we advocate.

Here are some ideas:
  • Protect our digital culture.
    • Culture is not corporate.
  • Users deserve rights.
  • Keep culture in the hands of the people. (maybe 'in the hands of Canadians' ?)
  • There is no place for the state in the family rooms of the nation. (parallel of Trudeau)
  • I bought it, so it's mine
    • Having paid for it once, I shouldn't have to pay for it again
  • Creativity builds upon creativity
    • To control today's creativity is to destroy tomorrow's
  • Fair use is fundamental to copyright.
  • The middleman profits to the harm of artists
  • All your culture are belong to us (parallel of 'All your base are belong to us' internet meme)
    • This is an organic culture of people - not of corporate dictation
  • C-61 is corporate welfare
  • Criminalizing the everyday Canadian
  • Giving away the keys to our culture. (in the context of the digital locks metaphor)
    • or Locking Up Our culture
    • Don't give away the keys to our culture
    • Don't lock up our culture
  • Promoting progress for the benefit of the public (a central tenet of original copyright, but probably too vague as a slogan)

Broad Appeal

Any slogans that we adopt should have the benefit of broad appeal. It's important that not just us technocrats understand the slogan but the average Canadian does as well. The "all your base" slogan is a little "inside baseball".

The "creativity builds ...", "fair use is fundamental ...", and "middleman profits ..." are a little dry in my opinion.

I do like "no place for the state", "I bought it so it's mine", and "C-61 is corporate welfare". They are snappy and to the point.

...we don't have to use all of the slogans for every audience. certain ones might have an especially good affect on certain groups. I'm sure some of the younger crowd would appreciate memetic references.

Those last few are really anti-C61 catchlines rather than a slogan that appropriately describes our group. We need our image to be of positive forward thinking that takes people's interests into account.
